Hurricane Milton has weakened into a tropical storm, with its winds diminishing to 35 kmph, after making landfall on Florida’s eastern coast on Tuesday. The US National Hurricane Center said that Milton is “likely to be a significant hurricane” with winds up to 93 kmph. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in the state.

Hurricane Milton is likely to hit the US’ west coast as early as Wednesday afternoon, with tropical storm conditions beginning later in the day, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Tuesday. It will be the fifth hurricane this year to make landfall in the US. In 2012, only two hurricanes were Category 1 when they hit the US.

Tropical storm Hilary is approaching Southern California and parts of the Southwest on Sunday, bringing fierce winds and historic rainfall to areas that have not seen tropical storm conditions in more than 80 years. Hilary is moving near the Baja California peninsula. It’s expected to sweep across southern California by the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Tropical storm watches were issued for the Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Orange County areas in California after Hurricane Hilary hit Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Hilary is expected to bring heavy rains to the West Coast and Southwest United States through the weekend. “Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours,” the National Hurricane Center said.
