The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reportedly terminated nearly 800 research projects at a breakneck pace, wiping out significant chunks of funding to whole scientific fields. The analysis by Nature said that 17% of the terminated research projects were related to COVID-19 and 29% to HIV/AIDS. Scientists have accused NIH and the White House of “arbitrary and capricious” actions.

Researchers have created the largest-ever 3D map of a mouse’s brain, and have described their work in a package of eight papers published in Nature and Nature Methods. The high-resolution 3D map contains more than 200,000 brain cells, around 82,000 of which are neurons. The wiring diagram of a mouse’s brain is the most detailed so far.

The US Department of Health and Human Services is planning to move some people around, an e-mail obtained by Nature showed. Several NIH leaders were offered the chance to transfer to the Indian Health Service, the division of HHS that provides medical care to Indigenous people in the US, the email stated. Earlier, the Trump administration announced plans to dismiss 10,000 people.

In a study published in Nature, researchers have found that bile can help extend the lifespan of people who eat low-fat food. The team said that the compound, called lithocholic acid, prolongs the lifespan of flies and worms. In another study in Nature, researchers found that the compound extends the lifespan of nematode and fruit flies.

Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage (AANHPI) groups in the US have been working to improve health outcomes of their communities, researchers said. “The data we have doesn’t tell the whole story, it just tells part of the story,” researchers told Nature. They found that AANHPI groups had a higher incidence of cancer and disease than their non-AANHPI counterparts.

Urban heat islands are more expensive to live on than white or richer areas, according to a study published in Nature. It found that the average person of colour lives in census tracts with higher summer daytime SUHI [surface urban heat island] intensity than non- Hispanic whites in all but six of the 175 largest urbanised areas in the continental US.
