High winds threaten to cause a new fire in Southern California
A new fire broke out in Southern California on Monday night, adding to the string of fires there in the past week that left over 20 people dead. The Hurst Fire north of LOS ANGELES was 97% contained, Cal Fire said. The National Weather Service forecasted high winds up to 70 kilometres per hour in Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Wednesday.

The number of people ordered to leave their homes due to wildfires in Southern California has declined to 92,000, from 89,000, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s office said on Monday. However, the Red Flag warning is still in effect for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Wednesday. The National Weather Service warned of “damaging winds gusting between 55 and 70 mph”.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for parts of South Carolina and North Carolina. A winter storm warning has been issued for Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Earlier, the NBA postponed the game between Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks scheduled to take place in Atlanta due to the storm.

The winds in US’ Los Angeles and Ventura counties, where multiple wildfires are burning, are expected to reach gusts of up to 100kmph. “The typical strengths of…winds are on…order of…30 to 60 mph when they occur a couple times a year,” National Weather Service (NWS) LA/Oxnard Chief Meteorologist Ariel Cohen said. Red flag warnings are in effect through Friday.

The US State Department has advised the public to avoid travel in affected areas as a winter storm is expected to hit parts of the country. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter weather warnings and advises people to stay indoors and not travel if they are in the storm’s path. The storm is expected to begin on Saturday and continue till Monday.

North Carolina recorded a record 48-hour rainfall of 29.58 inches on Friday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). It said that Busick received 29.58 inches of rainfall and Mount Mitchell received 24.20 inches of rainfall in just over an hour. The Georgia Climate Office said that the area has seen more rain than any other place in recorded history.

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings in US’ Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Arkansas during the Memorial Day weekend. At least 18 people have been killed in the tornadoes and thunderstorms. The weather service office in Tulsa, Oklahoma, warned on Sunday on a dangerous storm moving across the northeast part of the state through 2 am.

Snow and cold conditions will reach parts of the US in coming days, the National Weather Service has said. “The cold weather is expected to stick around going into next week with dangerously low temperatures and wind chills through at least midweek,” it added.
