British children have lower blood pressure and diabetes because of sugar rationing

A study found that those exposed to sugar rationing at an early age had a 35% lower risk of diabetes and a 19% lower risk of high blood pressure in middle age. It also found that disease protection was greatest for those who were conceived during sugar rationing and were babies while rationing continued. The study was conducted by the UK Biobank of Genetic and Medical Data.

Researchers said the drugs were not associated with an increased risk of cancer or liver disease. However, they added that there’s a high risk of metabolic syndrome, a condition in which the arteries and tissues in the blood are damaged.

Many participants in a UK national diabetes prevention programme who do not participate in the programme are members of minority-ethnic communities that are at particularly high risk of diabetes and its complications, scientists have said. Eligibility for the programme is determined by blood sugar level. The researchers said there was a correlation between drops in blood sugar and improvements in cardiovascular health.
