Is there a link between Alzheimer’s disease and infections?

A study has shown that a vaccine reduces the chances of developing dementia by 20% in the seven-year follow-up period after receiving it. The study involved over 13,500 people in the UK and Wales who received one of three shingles vaccines between 2006 and 2010. In the study, those who received shingles vaccine had a 30% reduced risk of developing dementia than those who didn’t.

The debate about brain clearance and dementia

Maiken Nedergaard, a neuroscientist at the University of Rochester in US, has claimed that people who report six hours or less of sleep a night are more likely to develop dementia later. In her latest paper, Nedergaard said that “we have mice that sleep completely normally”. She added that the fibers mounted in a hook can’t be carried on a mouse’s head.

However, a Stanford University neurology professor said that the 10-minute screening test is not in-depth look at cognitive function, adding that it’s important to measure a person’s cognitive performance against their performance earlier in life.

The Knight-ADRC cohort is an NIA-funded study of clinical dementia subjects and age-matched controls. Among individuals with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma data, Alzheimer’s (AD) cases corresponded to those with a diagnosis of dementia of the Alzheimer’s type using criteria equivalent to the National Institute of Neurological and Communication Disorders and Stroke- Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association for probable AD58.
