There was no end to the war in Gaza
The death toll in Gaza from over three months of conflict between Israel and the territory’s Hamas rulers has reached over 25,000, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Sunday. According to the ministry, at least 178 people were brought to Gaza’s hospitals in a single day. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said that Israeli forces in southern Gaza were acting with great precision.

The US’ Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has said it expects to restore water pressure to most of its 7 lakh customers over the next 24 hours. MLGW has repaired 36 broken water mains and more than 2,000 leaks in homes and businesses as of Saturday. On Saturday, MLGW had warned residents on Twitter that they would have a multi-day water outage.

Snow and cold conditions will reach parts of the US in coming days, the National Weather Service has said. “The cold weather is expected to stick around going into next week with dangerously low temperatures and wind chills through at least midweek,” it added. The cold weather is also expected to affect US states of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

The UK’s Met Office has predicted that there is a good chance of the average global surface temperature passing the 1.5C mark in 2024. “It is the first time we are forecasting” this, said Nick Dunstone, a climate scientist at the Met Office who led the work. The warmest year on record in the world so far was recorded in June.

The US’ midsection was under a blizzard warning for the first time this season, with up to 6 inches of snow expected in some areas. A blizzard warning was also issued for parts of Texas and Oklahoma, as well as for parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, Idaho and Nevada. As much as 10 inches of snow had been reported in the Chicago area.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalised on December 22 for complications following surgery for prostate cancer, the Pentagon said on Monday. Austin underwent a ” minimally invasive surgical procedure called a prostatectomy to treat and cure prostate cancer”, it added. He was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, which is treatable with antibiotic treatment. Austin is in good spirits, the Pentagon said.
