Hilary is making its way toward California with punishing rains

The US has issued a ‘Tropical Storm Warning’ for Southern California as Tropical Storm Hilary moves across the region. “Heavy rains associated with the system are expected to cause catastrophic and life-threatening flooding to the region,” the warning stated. Hilary was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone on Sunday, hours after it made landfall in Baja California, Mexico.

Tropical storm Hilary is approaching Southern California and parts of the Southwest on Sunday, bringing fierce winds and historic rainfall to areas that have not seen tropical storm conditions in more than 80 years. Hilary is moving near the Baja California peninsula. It’s expected to sweep across southern California by the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Chikungunya has been detected in mosquito bites for the first time in Argentina’s Buenos Aires. “Wherever the mosquitoes go, we’ll have chikungunya, and it’s a global concern,” the city’s Health Minister said. The first case of chikungunya was reported in Mozambique earlier this year and the virus has now been detected in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

Tropical storm watches were issued for the Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Orange County areas in California after Hurricane Hilary hit Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Hilary is expected to bring heavy rains to the West Coast and Southwest United States through the weekend. “Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours,” the National Hurricane Center said.

Former NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher has sued Sean Tuohy and Leigh Anne Tuohy for more than $15 million (over 100 crore). Oher said he wanted the Tuohy family to be his legal guardian until he was 25 years old. The Tuohy family said that the petition was a way to satisfy the NCAA when Oher might play football at the University of Mississippi.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has said that there’s “no firefighting capabilities for structure-to-structure urban fire in winds like that” in Hawaii, where a wildfire has killed 99 people. With this, it added, “There’s no firefighting capabilities for structure-to-structure urban fire in winds like that.” The fire broke out last week in the Hawaiian tourist town of Lahaina.

Researchers recorded data on the length of paid parental leave across institutions, the academic job and the parent type. The study analysed parental leave policies in both countries.

A new study by the UN Environment Programme says that there is a need for a Science Community to support measures and actions in the climate, energy and sustainable development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study assessed 56 indicators across all 17 SDGs. It added that an international climate finance mechanism would levy fees on carbon emissions that would be redistributed through national programmes.
