The Leading Institutions and Countries in the U.S. and China in Health Sciences Research Between January 2022 and July 2023: Analysis based on their Article Share
The tables in this supplement show the leading institutions and countries overall, ranked by their article Share (Share) in health sciences between January 2022 and July 2023, as well as the leading institutions in each sector based on the same metric. The leading institutional collaborations based on bilateral collaboration score (CS) are also included.
Two things immediately stand out. The United States makes up the majority of high-quality output in the health sciences, contributing a significant amount to publications in the Nature Index. China trails the US by a wide margin, with a Share of 2,108, in the natural-sciences output in the database.
Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the leading institution for high-quality health-sciences research, its involvement in the top Institutional partnership in the field is no surprise. But its dominance does not extend to all the other leading collaborations, some of which involve institutions outside the United States.
An extraordinary amount of money is invested in health-sciences research, but this hasn’t translated to a faster pipeline for new therapies. The increasing complexity of clinical trials is part of the problem, and something that researchers are hoping artificial intelligence can help to address. The trials for therapies are being changed to make the results more meaningful. If a medication can give good years, how many would it take for data to impact people with Alzheimer’s and other progressive conditions?
Structural weaknesses in health-sciences research that need attention include the lack of women in leadership positions. If institutions don’t work harder to increase the diversity of their faculty and staff, then they will damage the talent stream and ultimately health outcomes for everyone.
Nature Index.com: Bilateral Collaboration and Research Outputs of a Country/Territory in a Web-based Suggestion
Each query will return a profile page that shows the country or institution’s recent outputs, which it is possible to find more information on. Articles can be displayed by journal, and then by article. Research outputs are organized by subject area. The pages list the institution or country’s/territory’s top collaborators, as well as its relationship with other organizations. Users can track the performance of an institution and create their own indexes.
The bilateral collaboration score (CS) between two institutions A+B is the sum of each of their Shares on the papers to which both have contributed. Two institutions from opposite countries can collaborate on an article in one of the Nature Index’s journals.
The total number of articles in Nature Index journals has a small annual variation, according to adjusted share. It is arrived at by calculating the percentage difference in the total number of articles in the Index in a given year relative to the number of articles in a base year and adjusting Share values to the base year levels.

The US is followed by France with a Share of 2,109 and Japan with a Share of 2,078. Notably, Harvard University is the leading institution for health-sciences research, its involvement in the top Institutional partnership in the field is no surprise.
