Eventually, Air Force One departed, carrying an American president bound for Tel Aviv at a moment when Gaza was facing a humanitarian catastrophe and anger was reverberating across the Middle East.
The leaders of Jordan, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority had scheduled a meeting in Jordan with Biden to try and stop violence from spreading to other parts of the region, but they canceled it because of the hospital strike.
The only way for Palestinians in Gaza to leave is through the Rafah crossing. Food, water and medicine are rare in Gaza, and the situation has worsened in the last week. Hospitals are running out of electricity and are struggling to treat the thousands of injured, many of whom are children.
Biden’s team has been pressing Israel and Egypt to allow food, water and medicine into Gaza — and to let civilians out. Kirby was optimistic on the way to Tel Aviv.
Biden also hopes to get more information about efforts to locate and free hostages taken during the attacks, a handful of whom are believed to be American citizens. Biden will meet with people who lost loved ones during the attacks, as well as first responders, Kirby said.
At the same time, Biden has pledged support for Israel in its war against Hamas, and is expected to ask Congress later this week to provide funding for additional military aid to Israel.
“He’ll be asking some tough questions – he’ll be asking them as a friend, as a true friend of Israel but he’ll be asking some questions of them,” Kirby said.
Asked whether the United States was giving Israel the benefit of the doubt on that denial, Kirby said: “We certainly recognize that they feel very strongly that this was not caused by them.” Kirby said that Biden directed his national security team to find out what happened.
The hospital explosion prompted Biden to speak to Netanyahu. National Security Council spokesmen John Kirby said that Israel denied responsibility.
Abbas called for three days of mourning, after cancelling his meeting with Biden. The visit would be put off after Biden talked to the king.
The Gaza Strip Attack of the Baptist Al-Ahli Hospital: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
This latest round of violence erupted when militants from the Gaza Strip infiltrated Israel, killing more than 1,300 people inside Israel. The hostages were taken to the Gaza Strip. Entire southern towns were destroyed.
Biden made a trip to Ukraine in February. The president wasn’t tipped off about that travel until he was on the ground.
Protests had already erupted after the hospital strike in Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon, to name a few. Protests also broke out inPalestinian cities, with protesters chanting slogans against Israel and the Palestinian Authority while police tried to break up them.
The rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip and based on footage from Israeli drones and chatter among the militant group, it was a mistake, according to Daniel Hagari.
“We don’t see a direct hit at the hospital, we see kind of a hit in the parking lot but we’re still finishing the investigation of that,” he said, before adding that Israel continues to gather intel, including off Al-Jazeera live footage and other sources.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under intense domestic pressure to respond forcefully to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, said in a statement that it was the “barbaric terrorists in Gaza” that attacked the Baptist Al-Ahli hospital.
The White House said the president will consult with these leaders in person soon and that he will remain closely connected with them over the next few days.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire. He said too many lives and the fate of the entire region hang in the balance.

In a statement, Saudi Arabia slammed Israel saying it “condemns in the strongest terms the heinous crime committed by the Israeli occupation forces.” Saudi Arabia and Israel had been in serious talks to strengthen their relationship.
Hamas, meanwhile, continues to launch missiles at Israel cities. Israel’s Iron Dome defense system intercepts most. Air raid sirens are frequently heard in cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The bodies of dead people are strewn in the grass outside a hospital. Bloodied and traumatized women and children were show being treated in other nearby hospitals, screaming, shaking or still in shock. Medications have run low in Gaza at the two dozen or so still functioning hospitals, where medical supplies like painkillers have run out.
Israel has told half of Gaza’s population to leave their homes. But areas in the south, and across Gaza, continue to be hit by Israeli airstrikes.
The Health Ministry official gave a press conference after the hospital strike. He stood at a podium, surrounded by the dead bodies of children, including babies.
Dr. Fadel Naim, a doctor at the Baptist Al-Ahli hospital, told NPR that doctors were operating on patients when they heard a loud explosion. He saw dead and wounded people as he ran outside.
The baby was found on the roof of the hospital in the aftermath of the explosion. “Many babies died yesterday. Many babies.”

The largest hospital in Gaza has only a few more days of fuel left for its generators and has been without electricity since last Saturday, according to the U.N. relief agency.
Israel partially resumed water supply to the eastern part of Gaza this week, but the UN’s OCHA says that only 4% of Gaza’s population is supplied with water.
“With increasing exposure to pesticides, people have decided to get rid of their water supplies from agricultural wells, putting them at risk of death or infectious disease outbreak,” the U.N. relief agency said.
