American Airlines flew 13 million passengers out of Reagan National Airport. The majority of passenger traffic at the airport is carried out by American Airlines.
In its first year, the airport served more than 340,000 passengers and had over 2 million visitors. President Bill Clinton signed into law a bill in 1998 that renamed the airport after the 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt chose the airport’s location in 1938 after Congress debated the need for it, but failed to take action. Washington National Airport first opened for flights on June 16, 1941, with American Airlines winning a contest on which airline would land there first.
The name of the airport is DCA. The American Airlines flight was to land on runway 33, which was one of the four runways that it originally had.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is in Arlington, Va., across the Potomac River from the nation’s capital. The airport spans nearly a thousand acres, which includes land and underwater.
There were more than 23,000 flight operations out of DCA each month in 2024, according to airport authorities — an average of 812 per day. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority says there were more than 23 million passengers at the airport in the past two years.

The search and recovery efforts are underway near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the place where an American Airlines flight collided with a helicopter.
The FAA said helicopter flights would be restricted but not completely suspended. There are exemptions for medical emergency flights, active law enforcement and air defense, or presidential transport missions that must operate in the restricted area.
“Today’s decision will help secure the airspace near Reagan Airport, assuring the safety of airplane and helicopter traffic,” Sean Duffy, the U.S. transportation secretary, said in a statement. Today’s action is a significant step in restoring the trust of the American people in the aviation system.
The restrictions will remain in place at least until the National Transportation Safety Board completes its preliminary investigation into why the collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter occurred, the FAA said. The preliminary report is expected to be out about four weeks.
The investigators are looking at the area of the river where the two aircraft went down. Authorities say they have recovered the remains of 41 people who died in Wednesday’s mid-air collision.
The chief of Washington, D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services says 28 victims have been positively identified. Sixty-four people were on the jet and three on the helicopter. No one had a fight. Since 2001, there have been seven fatal aircraft accidents in the United States. Two of the three runways are closed as investigations and recovery operations continue. About 100 flights were canceled Friday because of the reduced capacity.
