The MitoBrainMap: A New Visualization of the Human and Alzheimer’s Diseases Brains based on a Woodworking Tool
Klein, H.-U. et al. Characterization of mitochondrial DNA quantity and quality in the human aged and Alzheimer’s disease brain. There is a bar named “mol”. The Neuro DeGroener will be 86 in the next ten years.
The map that the study’s authors called the MitoBrainMap is technically impressive and conceptually novel, according to Valentin Riedl, who was not involved in the project.
The brain’s mitochondria are more than just bit-part players. Martin Picard, a co-author of the study, says that the biology of the brain is deeply intertwined with the energetics of the brain. The brain is 20% of the human body’s energy usage.
The brains of 54-year-old donor and a slice of frozen human brain were split into 703 tiny cubes, thanks to the help of a tool used for woodworking. The cube size was similar to the units that make up standard 3D images of the brain. “The most challenging part was having so many samples,” says Picard.
