A winter storm slammed the US, causing canceled flights, stranded cars, no power

The Atlanta Airport Winter Storm Melts Early in the Day after the U.S. Gey. Airlines are urged to slow down, warn McMurry

The region’s biggest snowstorm in years has left 26% of flights delayed and 14% canceled out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta as of early afternoon, according to data from FlightAware.

“Especially if the ice remains on trees into [Saturday],” Stellman says. Some of that ice is on trees and power lines so a power outage would be a concern if winds pick up tomorrow.

According to Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University, ice is heavy and can break if something falls on it.

“The tree branch will collapse if you get enough ice on it,” Dessler says. “The tree branch will take out whatever’s underneath it, if it’s a power line or a fence or anything like that.”

Georgia has a winter storm warning in effect, but they are urging people to stay home until Sunday. Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry says if you need to get on the road, stay clear of the plowing roads.

McMurry says “Wherever it’s slushy, remember to slow down.” “Controlly drive.” No hard braking, and no quick maneuvers of the steering wheel [be]cause it is slick.”

People in need of shelter can call the Department of Natural Resources. Kemp said that parks in the North Georgia Mountains are close to capacity.

Little Rock and Southwest Arkansas were also thrashed by snow. More than 30,000 Arkansans are without power in southwest Arkansas after 15 inches of snow fell. Nine inches was seen in Little Rock.

Entergy Arkansas, the state’s largest electricity provider, says power should be restored by Saturday afternoon. It’s close to the time when the Winter storm warning should end.

Citing severe weather and hazardous conditions, the NBA postponed Saturday’s game between the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks, scheduled to take place at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The Charlotte area is expected to have ice and snow by Saturday, but temperatures are expected to drop again Saturday night, according to the NWS. “So anything that melts on Saturday will refreeze,” Palmer told NPR member station WFAE.

Georgia Power, the state’s largest electric utility, posted on social media that its crews worked overnight to address heavy icing and fallen trees. Our crews are out in force, navigating icy roads and will continue to work until everyone who can receive power is restored,” the utility said.

According to the National Weather Service, the significant winter storm wrapped up Saturday, with winter storm advisories lifting throughout southern counties. But travel issues and power outages persist across Southern states.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for parts of South Carolina and North Carolina. A winter storm warning has been issued for Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Earlier, the NBA postponed the game between Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks scheduled to take place in Atlanta due to the storm.
