The temperature on the Great Barrier Reef is 400 years high

A study by University of Melbourne has found that theCoral Sea, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef, is at high surface temperature during the January through March 2016 peak. The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, found that the Coral Sea’s surface temperature during this period reached an average of 1.73 C above the 1618–1899 average.

Tropical Storm Debby is heading towards Florida

Tropical Storm Debby, which is expected to hit the Florida coast next week, has gained strength as it moved north of Cuba. “We could see a stall or a meandering motion around coastal portions of southeastern United States,” National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said. Heavy rains are predicted to fall over North Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina early next week.

The French swimmer who lives and trains in the US, Leon Marchand, has won his fourth gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Katie Ledecky also dominated the women’s 1500-metre freestyle final, her signature event, and achieved a new milestone with 13 total medals. Ledecky came into the Paris Olympics the defending gold medal winner in the men’s 800-meter freestyle.

Evan Gershkovich was freed from a Russian prison as a result of a prisoner swap

Russian journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage last month, is expected to arrive in the US on Friday, his family said. Gershkovich was detained in 2018 after being accused of working with CIA to collect information on a Russian arms company. The Russian government said that it has released him as part of a prisoner swap.

A Trump-supported candidate won the Arizona primary

Democratic candidate for US Senate in Arizona, Ruben Gallego, has started a campaign to defeat Republican Kari Lake and her “dangerous” plan to ban abortion. In April, Lake opposed an Arizona Supreme Court ruling that revived a near-total ban on abortion in the state. Lake had previously praised Arizona’s law, which she said she was ‘thrilled’ Arizona would have the ban.

The consumer agency said that Amazon should pull unsafe products from independent sellers

US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has said that Amazon is a ‘distributor’ under the federal product safety legislation and therefore bears a legal responsibility for recalling dangerous products. It further said that Amazon failed to adequately incentivise consumers to return or destroy dangerous products. Amazon said it is “disappointed” by the decision and plans to appeal.
