The migration to Matter was possible because of an automatic update to the bridges. You can upgrade any of the smart home integrations that you already use, but it won’t affect the way your lights work. However, Matter will soon be the default protocol for all its smart home platform integrations. It is already the default for new Apple Home connections, and even though Matter will soon be enabled for both Amazon and Google Home, it is going to be important for users to keep their existing set-up.
I thought I had disconnected theAlexa cloud integration, but ended up with a lot of duplicate devices. (Pro tip: log in to your Hue account on the web, navigate to your bridge, and remove all the legacy cloud connections you find there before upgrading to Matter.)
Warning: I advise caution here. Adding the Hue Bridge to multiple platforms through Matter either didn’t work or caused stability issues because you have a lot of devices. It’s fairly easy to lose contact with Matter if you run into these problems. All associated devices should be removed from all the platforms if you just deleted the Hue Bridge from the first platform. You can remove it from an additional platform by leaving it in the app and it will stay there.
Note: Any motion sensors you have will come over to Alexa but as four separate devices: the sensor itself, then three separate sensors with default names for temperature, light level, and motion. Put these all in the same group. The dimmers, buttons, and other remotes aren’t supported by Amazon yet.

I attempted to add them to Home. At first, the bulbs showed up, both named Bulb. Two days later, the correct names appeared, but at no point have they been online or controllable through Google Home.
I removed the bridge and bulbs from Alexa and started with a clean install of Matter on Alexa, but within a few hours, all the devices disconnected and then started repeatedly reconnecting as new devices. My notifications on myiPhone were out of control because of the fact that each time I opened my phone, I saw four different entries: the sensor itself and three separate sensors with default names for temperature, light level, and motion. The only way I could stop it was by removing the Hue Matter integration from Alexa.
My lights are slow responding to voice commands. They don’t stay connected to my smart home platforms. I can’t add any new bulbs to Apple Home. I have had to deletion and re- add every single bulb and sensor at least six times. I can not get them to work on two platforms at the same time.
The Hue Bridge is limited to around 50 devices. It is easy to top out if you use motion sensor, remote, and smart bulbs in a few rooms, as well as the new contact sensors and cameras.
Previously, only Apple HomeKit allowed for multiple bridges; if you used other platforms, you were limited to the maximum amount allowed on one bridge. With Matter, you can connect multiple bridges to platforms such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
With Matter, those third-party bulbs are now exposed to the platforms you pair to, including Apple Home. However, with Matter, you now have more options for cheaper third-party bulbs that will work with every platform, so this benefit really only applies to existing setups.
When you upgrade to Matter, Apple’s adaptive lighting doesn’t work. The light based on time of day is something that the natural lighting features of Hue can adapt to. It won’t work with a number of lights, but Apple’s version works with a variety of lights.
