The Fate of the Salam Complex at Al-Shifa, Israel, in the First of Israeli-Military-Induced Hospital Strikes
It was the first of several strikes that took place on different sections of the complex during the early hours of Friday. The director of Al-Shifa said in a phone interview that seven people had died and several others had been wounded.
The claim that Al-Shiya was hit by a Palestinian projectile echoed claims and counterclaims made about another Gaza hospital, Al-Ahli, more than a month ago.
But at least three of the projectiles that struck it appear to have been Israeli munitions, according to pictures of weapons fragments collected and verified by The New York Times and analyzed by experts.
Israel is under international pressure not to target hospitals after the strikes did not cause mass casualties. Israel claims that the hospital sits on top of a Hamas command center and has been warning people still there to leave, even as its troops are working to surround the facility. Hospital officials deny Hamas operates there and say patients are dying because of lack of food, fuel and other supplies.
In addition to the weapons remnants, an analysis of video footage shows that three of the projectiles were fired into the hospital from the north and south, contrary to the western trajectory indicated on a map released by the I.D.F., which it said was based on radar detections. A review of satellite images showed there were I.D.F. positions north and south of the hospital early Friday.
TEL AVIV, Israel — Gaza’s largest hospital reports that it has buried more than 100 people in a mass grave, as it says bodies decompose in its courtyard and babies are dying because their incubators have no power.
Gaza’s health situation in the light of the October 7 attacks by the Hamas militant group: A sniper fire report by the Ministry of Health
“Our staff is saying we do not have electricity,” said Caney. People are stuck in corridors due to the fact that they can’t transfer patients to ambulances because of the sniper fire.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 12,000 Palestinians have died there. Officials report a rising death toll as Israel continues its siege on the region in response to the Oct. 7 attacks by the militant group Hamas. The health officials said there had been challenges updating the tally for the third day in a row due to service and communication disruptions.
The continued fighting has made crowded hospitals in the north available to patients who fear they will be evacuated to the south.
The basement of the hospital includes the administration and store, according to Gaza health officials. It has become a place where people fleeing the bombing can take shelter.

It added that bodies decompose in its courtyard and infants are dying because their incubators have no power. A statement by Gaza’s Ministry of Health said more than 12,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict.
